Today mentoring is a common practice among businesses to nurture the talents of less experienced employees. The word mentoring itself connotes a variety of roles and meanings. A mentor might be a counselor, guru, teacher, coach, or adviser. Organisations have chosen different terms to represent the relationship.
Regardless of the chosen words to describe the roles, mentoring relationships play a significant role in career outcomes of employees. These relationships may be naturally occurring, arise through informal practices, or be intentionally developed through formal internship programs. Because of its influence on the mentee, the mentor, and the organisation as a whole, careful consideration must be given to how effective mentoring evolves.
Effective mentoring typically involves role modeling, and so it is important that an organisation has a positive culture with a shared understanding of organisational purpose and objectives. An organisation's mission, vision, values, and direction would need to be clear to all participants.
An organisation would have to question if it places a priority upon training and skill development or if the development and maintenance of human resources are as important as the care given to financial, plant and equipment, and informational resources.
Effective mentoring relationships require good interpersonal skills. Because we have mouths, it is often assumed that we naturally can communicate effectively and resolve conflicts; because we have ears, we naturally can be active listeners; because we've observed sports teams, we know what good "coaching" involves.
